How is this different from giving the PDF to the AI directly?
When you upload a PDF straight to an AI, it reads every page as an image too — accurate, but it burns a lot of tokens.
- 5–10× fewer tokens — a PDF read directly costs roughly 2,000–7,000 tokens per page (text + image), while Markdown is text only, so a few hundred tokens per page is enough.
- Markdown is plenty for text documents — for reports, papers, and handoff docs, Markdown alone lets the AI read accurately at a fraction of the cost.
- An honest limit — for documents where the visuals are the point (charts, diagrams, scanned pages), Markdown can't carry everything. For those, uploading the PDF directly may be the better choice.

Can't I just upload the PDF to ChatGPT directly?

Are scanned (image-only) PDFs supported?
Right now the converter is optimized for PDFs that contain real text. Image-only scans have no extractable text and need OCR support, which is on the roadmap.
Does it handle PDFs with lots of tables?
Body text is extracted reliably page by page. Full reconstruction of complex table structures is still limited and is something we plan to improve.
